If you find it impossible to stretch your fabric taut when using a hand embroidery hoop, wrap some cotton bias binding completely around the inside hoop. This will create good tension and prevent your fabric from slipping out of the hoop. Make sure that each wind of the binding overlaps the previous, and then stitch or glue the ends in place.
