This week’s prompt for the Wild Soul Art Journal Challenge was “Beginnings”. For this week’s art journal page I decided to work with some of the techniques that I’ve explored in my art journal during the last several weeks. I really love the process of collage, as well as layering colors and texture to create rich and complex backgrounds, so I used these techniques to create this page.
Because I always work intuitively, the outcome is never quite what I envision in my head when I begin. It’s like a dance where I move backward and forward, adding some of this, removing some of that, until things start to make sense. I really like the way this art journal page turned out using collage made with scraps of paper and magazine images that perfectly reflect my feelings about new beginnings.
When considering new beginnings, it’s not always easy to let go of things that are no longer working for us; things that perhaps we’ve grown attached to and are comfortable with, even if they no longer serve us in a positive way. So in that respect, letting go of those things to make space for new beginnings, can be challenging.
And with beginnings there’s always the question – how/where/when to start. I always feel that there’s no better time to start than where you are right now, taking baby steps if necessary and finding your way as you go.
Having a regular art journal practice was a new beginning for me this year. I’ve made art journal pages off and on for years, but without the discipline of a regular practice, and I wasn’t too sure I would have the time for a weekly page, but I decided to do it anyway. And I’m so glad that I did because it’s been so much fun each week to see what emerges from the chaos on my journal page.
If you’re ready to invite a new beginning into your life, this is one of the best new beginnings there is. A regular art practice will change your life, and the Wild Soul weekly art journal challenge is free to participate – it’s my gift to you. You can find all the details here.
If you scroll to the end of the page, you can find a list of supplies I used, as well as time-lapse video showing how everything went together.
