Invisible sew-in magnetic snaps are perfect to use when you want the bag closure to lay perfectly flat or you don’t want a visible gap. These type of magnetic snaps are small, very strong magnets enclosed in a plastic case. They are generally sewn into the bag between the lining and the outer fabric and they can be used as a closure on any type of bag, with or without a flap.
In this example, the bag has an asymmetrical curve along the top and in order for the curved sides to close properly and look aesthetically pleasing, the front and back sections needed to butt right up against each other.
Using a standard magenetic snap would leave a slight gap between the front and the back sections of the bag which looked a bit odd. Using invisible sew-in magnetic snaps, the front and back sections close perfectly without any gap what-so-ever.
It’s very easy to install invisible magnetic sew-in snaps. The plastic casing allows you to easily position and stitch the magnet to your project. For this bag I’ve used Peltex heavyweight stabilizer as the under-structure, and I’ve stitched two magnetic snaps close to the top edge of the stabilizer, on the inside of the front section; one at each end.
The other two snaps are stitched to the inside of the back section. When attaching these snaps to other types of bags and purses where you don’t have the support of a rigid stabilizer, you would normally sew the snaps to a small piece of stabilizer or interfacing slightly larger than the snap casing for support, and then sew them directly to the lining, the interlining, or the bag interfacing.
A simple zigzag stitch gives a little extra security so the snaps don’t come loose.
After the snaps are sewn into place, the lining is then positioned over the top of the snaps and they become totally invisible except for a slight bump on the surface.
Once the snaps are sewn into place, the rest of the purse can be completed. Now the front and the back of the purse simply clamp shut – very elegant – and invisible!
