Visual Journaling: Collage

Continuing my visual journal efforts, after finishing painting my backgrounds last week, this weekend I added some collage elements.

I didn’t have much room to work with due to being in the middle of a VERY big and exciting project – news coming soon – but I did manage to get a little work done.

Visual Journal ToolsAs I was rummaging through some of my old papers looking for collage elements, I happened to come across this pad of Palette Paper. I had been using these sheets for image transfers, but now I can actually use them for the purpose they were intended!

I can’t remember where I got them, but I think it was the local craft store. I like them because there’s no clean-up – just use and toss. Yes, I know it’s not very “green” and I’m usually more conscious of recycling, but it was convenient and convenience won by a long shot this weekend.

I used this red background to work with a theme of poppies because you know how much I love poppies!

I printed out some photoshopped images onto a piece of copy paper and tore away the edges. I also chose to use some words – a poem by Robert Browning -
Your ghost will walk,
you lover of trees
(If our loves remain)
In an English lane,
By a cornfield-side
a-flutter with poppies.

I glued them to the painted background and gave them a color wash of the same color red as I used for the background. This really toned the image colors down a lot and I really like the way it turned out; there’s a nice balance and repetition between the top and bottom image, with the top image very light and the bottom image very dark. This is a nice layout and I think I can do something with it. I’ll need to let it sit and percolate for a bit.

  1. That looks great! and I love the poem, so apt! I also tend to let things percolate, to tell me what they want to be; this really appeals. I look forward to seeing the completed page.
