I’m not a strong proponent of the phrase “thinking outside the box”. I think that phrase places too much emphasis on creating ideas from outside of your comfort zone. When you’re outside your comfort zone you are instantly uncomfortable, and then you have the added pressure of having to come up with brilliant ideas as well? That’s waaaay too much pressure.
I prefer to promote creative thinking from “inside the box and pushing at the seams”. This puts you in a familiar place with familiar surroundings while encouraging you to push at the edges of what you ordinarily would do in order to create something extraordinary. Once that first step is taken and the edges are pushed out a little, then keep pushing and pushing; you’re still inside the box, but the box is now getting bigger. You’re also in your comfort zone but now beginning to look at things from a different perspective. So the bigger the box gets, the more perspective you have and looking at things from a different perspective is a sure-fire way of kickstarting creative ideas and solving problems.
This short fun video, although called “Thinking Outside The Box”, is a very good example of looking at things from a different perspective, and solving a problem in a *very* creative way. I hope you enjoy it; I love it. If you’ve reading this post in an rss reader or rss email, you’ll have to click through to the website to view the video.
