I’ve been asked by many of you where I get my invisible magnetic snaps from. Invisible magnetic snaps are small, thin magnetic discs encased in a pocket of plastic. The plastic has enough width around the edges so that you can easily sew the snaps into the lining of your project. They are a brilliant idea! You can find a tutorial on how to attach them here.

I use these types of magnetic snaps for most everything these days; I love that they are quite easy to attach and there is no visible attachment to detract from the appearance of my projects. They are also *super* strong and can easily close even when working through multiple layers of fabric and/or stabilizer.
I use them on all my art bags and in the photo below you can see where it closes, that there is – well, nothing to see!

I get my invisible magnetic snaps from Tantalizing Stitches on Artfire. She has all sorts of sizes so you’re sure to find something that suits, and she also has all sorts of other bag making supplies if you need them.
Happy snapping! Invisibly of course.

Hi Linda,
Thank you so much for sharing your tutorial on installing hidden magnetic snaps. People have been asking me how to install them but its so hard to explain without pictures.
I’ve also tried to explain how to install them without any trace of their existence (as most people would probably install them with stitching visible). You did it perfectly!
I have actually suggested people not to sew them for fear of breaking their sewing machine but it looks like sewing right into the plastic is a very good way to install them.
Do you have a specific type of needle/machine you suggest for doing this?
You can also install them by using fusible interfacing like a sandwich. Place the hidden magnetic snaps in the center of two overcut interfacing pieces and hot iron the edges.
Hi El, I like to sew them into the lining to ensure that they don’t come loose. I’ve found that even with fusing them to the interfacing, sometimes they can slip out of place particularly with a lot of use.
I use my standard sewing foot with either a straight stitch and the needle nudged all the way to the left, or a very narrow zigzag stitch. I also sometimes add a dot of strong glue to hold them in place.
I get asked a lot about these snaps, so I might do a short video on how to install them shortly. A visual is always easier to understand
Linda
Stupid question but I need to know the “correct” way to sew them in. Is it smooth side to smooth side or smooth side to the side with the indention??
Dalene, on each button (at least on mine) there’s a flat side and a side with rounded edges. You want the flat sides to be facing. You can usually tell which side is the right side because they clamp together much more strongly than when you put them wrong sides together.
