Digital Grounds: Printing on Dryer Sheets

Please enjoy a rerun of my experiments with digital grounds; this is where it all began.

I like using dryer sheets in my art quilts and I particularly like printing on dryer sheets because the resulting prints are luminous and have beautiful web-like texture that you can’t achieve using other fabrics.

Digital Grounds and Dryer Sheets

I used the same strip test method as for my previous testing on cotton fabric, and here’s the verdict:

The white matte Digital Ground formed an almost opaque surface so of course the color was most prominent on this strip. However the treatment also camouflaged the web-like texture of the dryer sheet which I think is the dryer sheets’ best characteristic.

There was no discernible difference in print or color quality between the untreated section and the other two sections that were painted with the other types of Digital Grounds – the print color looked the same. There was the usual shiny surface on the underside of the clear gloss which showed through in places and looked “plastic-like”, and the digital grounds also seemed to dull the luminosity of the dryer sheet.Thumbs Down

All up, the results using digital grounds on dryer sheets are poor and I wouldn’t waste my time. Dryer sheets are perfectly imperfect just as they are.

Next – printing on cheesecloth … transparent cheesecloth! Yes you can!
