Digital Grounds: More Printing on Cheesecloth

Please enjoy a rerun of my experiments with digital grounds; this is where it all began …

Digital Grounds and CheeseclothThe other day I did some testing with Digital Grounds using cheesecloth. I like using cheesecloth in my artwork because of the wonderful texture it produces.

For this test I used cheesecloth with an “acrylic skin” backing. For most textile artists “acrylic skins” will be a foreign technique. The video below explains the process using paint to make the skin however for the cheesecloth technique the skins can also be made using Matte Medium or similar type mediums which dry clear. A clear skin will give you a transparent background for your cheesecloth.

This is a video from the Golden Products website explaining the technique.

I made a skin using two coats of matte medium after which I placed a layer of cheesecloth on top and applied two coats of Digital Ground for Non-Porous Surfaces. This effectively glued everything together and left me with a stiff sheet of transparent cheesecloth. The cheesecloth sheet was probably stiff enough to put through the printer without a carrier, however to be on the safe side I taped it to a piece of copy paper …

… and then sent it to print. The result is awesome! – a very clear print, slightly transparent, with great cheesecloth texture, and fully sewable! It does have a slight sheen but it doesn’t look too bad. This now opens up a whole new level of experimentation with other colors and additives, and additional texture.

This technique produces a very different result to the previous cheesecloth experiment although both methods are quite useful depending on your application.

Thumbs UpSo thumbs up to cheesecloth on an “acrylic skin” backing using Digital Ground for Non-porous Surfaces – I can’t wait to play around further with this technique – it’s awesome!

I watched the golden video on the skins and looked at your previous cheesecloth and the current one. Do you find that it’s worth all that work- I man, is the image enough more stellar to go through the taping and drying and spreading? The images looked fairly similar- more detail on the “skin” one- but I am wondering if there is some reason you recommend this process. I use a lot of Golden stuff so it’s available to me.

Other than that, I always look forward to your weekly emails and LOVE your bead work.
