Make today better

Every week I leave the house and do something fun. This might not sound like such a big deal, but when you live and run a business from the same house, it’s very easy to get *too* comfortable with your surroundings.

My weekly outings often involve a visit to the craft store for a few creative supplies because, honestly, in what world is that not fun?

Cobblestone

But this week also included breakfast at Panera Bread. I recently began a practice of mindful eating which means I don’t count calories or points or portion sizes; instead I stay mindful about my food choices and what my body needs to stay healthy. I must admit that this isn’t as easy as it sounds and I fall off the mindful eating wagon every now and then, but it is getting easier with time.

On the plus side, it means I can eat things like this delicious Cobblestone for breakfast – without a side order of guilt.

Cobblestone

I don’t know why they give you a fork; it’s impossible to eat with anything but fingers.

Cobblestone

Mmmm, delicious.

Cobblestone

I like Panera Bread and not just for the creative energy they use to make their delicious breads and sandwiches and pastries, or their social philosophy. I also love the little creative surprises I often find there.

Like this banner which was hanging right in front of me as I ate my Cobblestone.

If you can’t quite read the main question, it says – How our guests say they make today better. Which of course started me thinking – “How could I make today better?”.

This is probably not a question that immediately comes to my mind each morning when we wake up; I know it’s not something I generally ask myself. But what if it was? How would that make a difference to your day? Would it change the way you approached your day? Looking for something positive to add to your day instead of just taking from it as a way to get through it? And at the end of the day, how would it feel to know that you did one small simple thing that made your day, or someone else’s day, better? I think that’s pretty powerful stuff.

I’m thinking that this question would make a big difference to my day so I’ve decided it’s important enough to include in my morning ritual. The morning ritual is a topic that we’re discussing this week in The Creative Explorer’s Club and it’s all about beginning your day in a positive way with a strong focus and guided energy. It’s used as a way to avoid the many distractions that can get in our way during the course of the day that stop us from achieving our creative dreams and our goals.

The question “How could I make today better?” is a perfect way to end that ritual. And traveling through the day looking for ways to make things better also serves to keep us in the present moment which is where our creative energy is most powerful.

So … what are you doing to make today better?

Saying yes

Last year I learned to say “no” to a lot of things. Things that didn’t really support me in my life or business. Learning to say no can be quite difficult if you don’t do it very often and it takes a little practice, but I like it that I can now be discerning about what I choose to allow into my life.

To balance that out though, I think it’s also important to learn to say “yes” and to be open to new ideas, possiblities and opportunities. But also using a little wisdom or intuition to make sure it’s a “yes” that will bring something positive into to your life.

This year my Creative Explorers and I are working with words, images and symbols with our Vision Card Project. We have one vision card to cover the “big vision” for our entire year. You can see mine here. And then we have monthly Vision Cards to support us with our vision for each month. For January I chose the word “Yes”.

For this vision card I used some paper collage techniques which is something I don’t often work with, but it was a lot of fun putting this card together.

Vision Card

And I added some supportive quotations onto the back from some of my favorite philosophers. (Yes, Dr Seuss is one of them!)

Vision Card

I keep them pinned to my corkboard behind my computer so I can see them every day and be constantly reminded of my visions or goals for the year.

Vision Card

I’ve enjoyed using the “yes” word this month and can’t wait to see what emerges from the experience of using it right throughout this month.

What are you saying *yes* to this year?

The art of reinvention

A brand new day … a brand new opportunity to re-invent ourselves.

Reinventing

Don’t you just love that concept?

I like the idea that we can start again from where we are right now. And change direction. Just like that.

It’s very freeing to embrace whatever creative curiosity presents itself to you. And to follow that curiosity to see where it takes you. Without excuses, without apologies. Just because you want to. And just because you can. Guided by intuition and sometimes impulsiveness.

This year I’m fully embracing my persona of “Creative Explorer”.

The first step is reinventing my website. Just because I can. Ok, just did it! It has a brand new look!

And I’m reinventing my business as well.

Some things will be disappearing. And I’m embracing a new method of inspiring and motivating others creatively. And of course there will be new stuff coming.

This year I’ve decided to let go of some of the traditional methods of doing business and approach things a little differently. So I’ll be shaking things up a little; changing things, moving them around and keeping things interesting.

This year I’ve decided to view each new day as a new opportunity. An opportunity to do things differently and to be open to new possibilities. To challenge myself creatively, and to challenge you creatively also. And perhaps be a little impulsive once in a while. Instead of following a business plan, allow my business to unfold, and to build it from a place of fun and passion and intuition … and maybe some unexpectedness. So pay attention.

I’m not sure that’s a very good basis for developing a business – a business plan with no plan – and I’m sure there are people who’ll tell me it isn’t. But I’m doing it anyway. If it doesn’t work .. well, I’ll just change things again. Because I can.

So that’s what I’m doing with my brand new day. What are you doing with yours?

Out with the old, in with the new

Out with the old
I have a strong belief that in order to make space and allow new things into your life you have to let go of old things. This is a process that I’m not always very good at but I think I’m getting better.

For instance, when I buy something new I get rid of something old. Like new clothes. Each time I put a new piece of clothing in my closet, I remove an old piece and recycle or donate it. If I buy a new book, I remove an old one and donate or sell it. Plus this year I’m still getting rid of all the excess I’ve accumulated over the years. With every little thing that’s removed, I feel a little lighter. In body and spirit.

This year I’ve decided to take that principle and apply it to my business also.

My business focus has changed over the last several years and some of the aspects that comprise my business no longer feel in alignment with the type of work I’m doing now and my vision of how I want my business to look. These things tie me to a business model that I no longer feel a connection to.

So at the end of January (yes this month!) I’ll be retiring the entire series of instructional dvds and the online classes that are currently available in the Home Study section of my store.

I’m giving several weeks notice in case you want to grab one before they’re gone. (Please note: Students who are currently signed into the online classroom will continue to have access.)

Am I crazy? Possibly. Particularly since sales of my dvds over the last several years have always been good. This wasn’t an easy decision, but sometimes it isn’t just about the money.

I know hundreds if not thousands of students have been creatively inspired and motivated by the techniques presented on my dvds, and I fully intend to continue inspiring and motivating you! Just not using the same old tired techniques that have been around for years. I’m ready to creatively inspire and motivate you in a whole new way. There may be new, fresh dvds soon, but the only place you’ll find me teaching at the moment is here.

In with the new
So now I’ve purged my business of the old stuff, what am I bringing in that’s new?

Well, if you’ve been following my blog for any length of time you’ll know that for the last several years I’ve been playing around with photoshop and teaching myself to use it mainly as a way to bring to life the digital art designs that I use to print on my handbags and accessories. I’ve enjoyed the process so much that this year I plan to fully develop the design side of my business.

Looky here at my new toy! It’s big and shiny and I’m not quite sure how to use it yet; there’s obviously going to be a learning curve.

Bamboo Create

Bamboo CreateFor those of you who haven’t a clue what this is, the Wacom Bamboo Create tablet is a design tool that plugs into your computer and allows you to sketch and draw directly into a program such as Photoshop. Similar to sketching in a sketchbook but with a few advanced features, plus you don’t have to scan it to get it into photoshop.

I’ve had a very small tablet for some years that I use from time to time and it was kind of fun but a bit limited in scope. This big tablet takes designing to a whole new level. I’m kind of excited!

I think that’s a fair swap of new for old, don’t you think?

Happy New Year 2012

Happy new year to all my friends, readers, students and customers; to those who just stop in from time to time, to those who visit every day, to those who support me in so many different ways. If I don’t say it often enough I’m truly thankful and grateful that you’re here.

I hope you’ll join me as we take this marking of time, the upcoming first day of a brand new year, and use it as an opportunity to start afresh with a brand new blank page and begin writing our story for this year; a story that’s inspiring, creative and meaningful. And of course one that includes lots of cloth and thread.

I’m excited about this new year and I hope you are too.

Happy New Year

We will open the book.
Its pages are blank.
We are going to put words on them ourselves.
The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day.
Edith Lovejoy Pierce

Beginning where you are
I love the sentiment of that quotation, however as I mentioned in an article I wrote the other day – you can read it here – that although the beginning of a new year is a wonderful time to begin writing your story, you can do it at any time. I got so many lovely emails about the article, and about that particular paragraph, that I made you a downloadable card – a new year’s gift – just so you can remember that you can begin writing your story at any time.

Begin Your Story

Click here, and the image will open in a new browser page then you can “right click” and save to your desktop (or whatever you do on a mac – sorry, not mac savvy). Print it out, stick it somewhere where you can see it regularly, and enjoy.

Other ways to help you on your new year’s journey
