Tantalizing background textures

I’ve been making a lot of textured backgrounds this last week or so to use as pages in my Image Transfer Art Journal which you can see here. Once I paint the backgrounds I scan them into photoshop and save them as high resolution digital images so I can re-use them in other projects – digital recycling as it were.

Today I’ve made a few of my favorites available for you to download. You can use them as textures for digital art, or you can print them out on paper or fabric and use them as textures for mixed media art or other projects.

Here are a few quick suggestions for usage.

Exploring image transfer for mixed media

It’s so easy to lose track of time when you’re doing fun creative stuff. And these last few days certainly have been filled with that sort of thing as I begin to prepare for next month’s tutorial for my Creative Explorers which is all about exploring image transfer – one of my very favorite things.

But when I opened my image transfer sample book which is a plain three ring binder filled with typed notes and plain samples on white fabric, I was so uninspired I just closed it again.

And instead I started a brand new project … an Image Transfer Art Journal … what a brilliant idea!

I’ve already finished the first page which is a double page and isn’t it just beeeauutiful? So much more inspiring that my plain old three ring binder.

I first painted and textured some mixed media paper sheets. This one has crumpled tissue paper texture …

.. and this one has cheesecloth texture.

Once the backgrounds were dry, I printed this design directly onto the tissue paper texture. It printed out perfectly and I love the way it turned out.

Thoughts on becoming a Golden Girl

I’ve enjoyed spending a bit of time recently working with Golden paints, gels, pastes and mediums. I think I’m definitely becoming a “Golden Girl”.

Golden Paints on Fabric

It’s been fun experimenting with the different textures that can be made using the pastes and mediums.

Golden Paints on Fabric

And I really love how beautiful the strongly pigmented colors turn out.

Golden Paints on Fabric

However sometimes things don’t turn out as planned. I don’t know if I can save this piece – it’s gone all dark and moody on me and I’m not sure I like the colors.

Golden Paints on Fabric

But did you know that Golden products offer a complete system for all types of painting applications?

There are certain products than can be mixed with their paints to make them suitable for painting on fabric. I haven’t tried this yet, but you can find more information here.

Then there are other products that can be added to their paints which make them more suitable for traditional art, or mixed media applications like the above examples, and my new favorite book cover which you can see here.

And of course, the Digital Grounds products that I use for printing on fabric which you can see here, can also be combined with other products to create interesting effects and results.

So in other words you can mix and match any of the products depending on your desired results, or you can just play around explore and be surprised! I hope to have some finished pieces to show off very shortly.

New in the eStore: Royalty Free Images

One of my goals this year is to release some of my Photo Art digital designs as high resolution royalty free images for use in textile and mixed media art projects, and I hope to have some of these available very shortly.

But in the meantime, I’ve had so much fun this last week or so working with Photoshop Elements, particularly playing around with the image manipulation filters, that I decided to release some of those particular designs also as high resolution royalty free images.

The designs in the Kaleidoscope Series are based on nature images and are fun, bright and colorful. There are six sets in each series, with five images in each set, for a total of 30 images per series. Each series is a different manipulation of the same image so they all the images in each set color coordinate and go together – perfect for coordinated projects!

Click on the images below and they’ll take you through to my brand new eStore where you can browse all the different designs.

And pssst - if you’re a member of The Creative Explorer’s Club, I’ve made all of the images in this particular series available to you for free, and they are also royalty free.

The mental rut and how to shake it

It’s easy to get stuck in a mental rut; stuck in the same pattern of thinking, don’t you think? I do it all the time. Unintentionally of course.

The mental rut is that comfortable place where we all stop and rest because it’s familiar and doesn’t require much effort on our part. It’s like being on autopilot, making the same choices time and time again, and of course getting the same results.

Sometimes the same results is what you want. Like when I’m working with photoshop elements and designing my photo art. I generally use the same or similar steps to achieve the results I like. Like this …

Weeds

This last week though as I was putting together the latest tutorial for my Creative Explorers, I decided to break out of my mental rut and do a little playing around exploring with some photoshohp settings that I rarely, if ever, have bothered to look at. And look what happened …

Weeds

It didn’t take much effort to shake my mental rut. Just by making a few small but different choices, by exploring a little deeper in a different direction, and by being curious, a whole new world of opportunity just opened up.

I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am to re-discover photoshop elements in this totally new and different way. I can so many possibilities to use these types of images in some upcoming new work. Stay tuned!

Living and working from the heart

“The Vision Card Project” is one of the projects that we’re working with in The Creative Explorer’s Club and each month we get to pick a word that resonates with us and make a card as a visual representation of the word.

For February I’ve used the word “Heart” and tried out some fun new techniques to make my card. Although February is traditionally the month of the heart, I’ve used it in a slightly different context for my card; more as a way to remind myself that everything I do, whether in my personal life or in my business life, should be approached with an attitude of love and gratitude. It’s easy to forget that when you find yourself doing stuff that isn’t quite so much fun but still a necessary part of life and business like taxes and housework.

Vision Card

I remember as a child I used to love playing with paper dolls and would spend hours carefully cutting out the doll and all the little pieces of clothing that came with it. Then more hours of playing with the doll and imagining a life where I got to wear all those beautiful paper clothes in the far away places of my imagination.

Well, this paper doll is nothing like those of my youth but I’m enjoying the experience of learning to color “outside the lines” and work from a place of artful interpretation. In some ways this reality is much better than those of my childish imagination.

Vision Card

You can see my other Vision Cards for the year here and here, and more about The Creative Explorer’s Club here.

The Art of Thread

It’s always fun to see yourself in print and in the April/May 2012 issue of Quilt Magazine you’ll find me along with a couple of other textile artists – Ellen Anne Eddy and Susan Briscoe – sharing our thoughts about thread in an interesting article called “The Art of Thread”.

Art of Thread

I’ve always loved using thread in interesting ways and you can see the many ways I use it by browsing through my online photo gallery.

As an interesting sidenote, about ten years ago when I first discovered art quilting, one of the textile artists I admired most was Ellen Anne Eddy who does incredibly detailed thread painted work. So it was an honor to be mentioned alongside her in this article. If you’d like to see some of her incredible work, you can find her website here.

And if you’re into sashiko, stop by Susan Briscoe’s website for some Japanese inspiration.

I’m not sure if this issue is available yet, but add it to your shopping list!
